River Spirit
Green Kalahari The river seemed to absorb all the frustrations and tensions of city life and our group was transformed into a united bunch of happy adventurers revelling in the thrills of the river. The spirit of early adventurers and their efforts to develop and enjoy the Southern Kalahari, lives on in the many adventure travel opportunities that are available in the area.

Life in the green Kalahari is not only provided by the rare and strange plants, animal life or vineyards. It also comes in a package full of sun-drenched travel delights. Such delights include trips on camel back, white water rafting on the Orange, parasailing on the many pans in the region, a lazy afternoon glide in a colorful microlight high above the rolling red dunes and
tough 4x4 trails in the jagged mountains of Riemvasmaak and the Mier Kalahari with its 35 to 40 meters high sand dunes.

For the gentler adventurer, there are hiking trails, canoeing, mountain biking, bird watching, game drives in the national and many exquisite private game reserves, camping and fly-in safaris and even moonlit dinners in the middle of a salt pan to choose from. The Khoi people call it 'Akoerabis', meaning the 'place of great noise'. The Orange River thunders its way into a deep granite gorge, giving birth to a spectacular 56-metre waterfall.
The waterfall came into being 500 to 600 million years ago following; an uplift, which caused the river to flow more rapidly and slowly carve today's awesome 18 kilometer-long ravine from the bedrock. In essence, the Augrabies Waterfall National Park, situated 120 kilometers west of Upington, is a wonderfully scenic park. Apart from the waterfall and 200 meter-deep gorge, it boasts sweeping granite planes, imposing granite domes and many fascinating species of animal and plant.

Of the more colorful are the cape flat rock lizard, with its vivid blue, green and orange markings the klipspringer antelope with its balletic grace, the endangered black rhino and the quiver tree, a peculiar aloe used by san hunters as quivers. The scenery, fauna-and flora can be enjoyed driving through the park or on exciting Black Rhino Adventure. The tour includes a glorious game drive, a meal in the veldt, and a gentle trip in a rubber 1nfi.atable on the Orange River.

There is also the Gariep 3-in-1 trail which offers visitors the opportunity to take a short hike, ride a mountain bike or enjoy canoeing, all in a single day. Those interested in being out in the veldt on their own should seriously consider the klipspringer three-day hiking trail, as it leads them to the eerily named picturesque vantage points of moon rock, Ararat and echo corner. Attractive face brick provides accommodation in the well-equipped park, air-conditioned self-catering chalets and a caravan and camping site. There is a number of small swimming pools in the park, an a la carte restaurant and a shop where visitors can buy anything from postcards to beer and firewood.
